The Fire-type Pokémon Charizard was chosen for the sixth anniversary celebration because it is the 006th monster in the Pokédex. Its Mega Charizard X and Y versions will also be available in Mega Raids, while Zapdos will be available in five-star raids. Throughout the celebration period, there will be an increased chance of encountering some of the starter monsters in the wild, such as Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, Pikachu, Chespin, Fennekin and Froakie, as well as others such as Machop, Ralts, Ledyba, Buneary and more, all with a chance of appearing in their Shiny forms.

Some rarer Pokémon will also appear less frequently, such as Gabite, Clauncher, and Helioptile. Field tasks will offer all the starters available in the game, from Treecko and Tepig to Rowlet and Popplio. PokéStops will offer commemorative stickers as bonuses, while the in-game shop will receive themed stickers and avatar items that will remain even after the celebration ends.

Starting at midnight on July 9 and running until 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, “Battle Weekend” will be held, with increased appearances of Team Rocket balloons every three hours and four times the Stardust in the Go Battle League. Trainers can look forward to seeing shadow Pokémon such as Geodude, Shinx, and Purrloin, with a special mention for Shadow Latios. Special Research centered around Team Rocket leader Giovanni will also be available and will run until September 1 at 10 a.m., with a Super Rocket Radar as a reward.
